Killer menus, steps from the beach

By David Rolland

Two of the best aspects of living in South Florida is all the delicious food you can gobble up and the beautiful coastlines that you can appreciate. A few local bright entrepreneurs decided to merge these two highlights by serving delicious food at waterfront locations. Here’s a quick survey of some of the best restaurants offering waterfront dining in Lake Worth and Lantana.

Old Key Lime House

Founded in 1889 Old Key Lime House is the oldest waterfront restaurant in Florida. It’s also the largest tiki bar in the state. They offer a happy hour every weekday from 4 – 7 where you can enjoy the sunset while sipping on their margaritas and rum runners. Some of the specialties on their menu include Maryland crab cakes, smoked mahi and steamed mussels. Make sure to save room for dessert to enjoy their namesake pastry with a tangy sweet slice of key lime pie.

Benny’s on the Beach

Established in 1986, Benny’s is a mainstay for those who want a scrumptious bite to eat when around the Lake Worth Beach Pier. Chef Jeremy Hanlon has created an evolving menu inspired by his insane travel schedule jet-setting the far reaches of planet Earth. Some of the highlights include their weekday seafood bakes featuring whole lobsters, snow crab and Atlantic Coast fish selections.  Weekends center around Paella Saturday and Sunday nights, inspired by Hanlon’s time in Spain where all of the authentic ingredients are imported from the Iberian peninsula, including the rare Bomba rice.

Benny’s on the Beach – Oceanwalk

This sister restaurant of Benny’s on the Beach replaced their old sister restaurant, Viva la Playa. But don’t worry, the views aren’t going anywhere. Both spots are steps from the Atlantic, with food nearly as local. Oceanwalk’s menu will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps in serving classic menu items that made Benny’s famous, while also expanding into new territory. Visitors can also expect tropical new libations.

Dune Deck

This family owned and operated restaurant first set up shop in 1991. Over the last 30 plus years Dune Deck has offered breakfast, lunch and weekend brunches overlooking the balmy Atlantic Ocean. Their eclectic menu offers something from everyone with seafood offerings like calamari and a fresh daily catch, to a kids menu offering fried shrimp and grilled cheese to plenty of vegetarian options like a portobello sandwich and a nice chilled gazpacho soup. Breakfast is served all day on weekends with lobster benedict, avocado toast and chocolate chip pancakes on the menu.
